Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I came here primarily because of the reviews. Our group ordered a pitcher of the fresh margarita and it was seriously lacking in tequila. It didn't taste all that fresh but more like a mix and it was loaded with so much ice you could barely get three glasses out it. One group member ordered the don Pepe fajitas that they came out warm not sizzling. I've never seen fajitas that don't sizzle. The rest of us order chimichangas and they were very soggy. On the bright side the meat was very good and the yellow rice was delicious. The Queso appetizer was also very good. Overall I won't be back. There are much better Mexican restaurants out there. I didn't try the Cuban food here.

My family has been going here for YEARS! We love it! It's one of our Sunday places to eat! They have updated the menu to include some Puertorican favorites like Mofongo!!
(5)Mike C.
If this was Miami id probably give it 4 stars, but super legit Cuban food, best I've had in this county, had the ropa vieja w rice and beans and plantains and chips/salsa..everything was PERFECT!! Highly recommend this place great service too
(5)Jane D.
The placed smelled bad, the salsa was not good and the portions were small.
(2)Kalvin K.
Great lunch specials here. I had a medium chickpea soup and it was the largest medium I have ever seen, very flavorful too. The chicken fajitas were delicious and plentiful. Service is excellent as well. Highly recommended for a good Cuban Mexican lunch spot.
(5)K D.
Nice service and delicious lemonade. The food was ok. We were told it was basically a must have type of food spot. Unfortunately we've had better elsewhere with larger food quantities. Although I must admit, maybe we would eat here again.
(3)Benny S.
This place is SOUTH FLORIDA best kept secret! Wife and I enjoyed the food, absolutely no complaints. They have an awesome 2 for $20 special with dessert! You can't beat the price anywhere for amazing food and good service! Very impressed! Good Job with getting me to go back!
(5)Lisa A.
Small, cozy, neighborhood Mexican food place...what more could you need in your life?? Service was super fast and attentive. All the food was brought out quickly and most importantly, tasted great! The portions were generous, we left stuffed! The prices were easy on the wallet too. They even have a 2 for $20 menu! We'll definitly be back.
(4)JJ B.
Overall this place is a 1-2 star place, even though it's priced higher. Food was all cheap ingredients and service was slow. I would Not go back...

We visit this restaurant often. It has been around for many many years. The servers are always friendly and do seem happy to be working there. I usually order the steak a la tampiqueña which is a traditional Mexican dish. It's perfect here. My boyfriend orders the vaca frita which is a traditional cuban dish. Again, perfect. The salsa you are served when you first arrive is delicious. It's thick and not too spicy. The papa rellena, nachos, and quesadillas have all been great as appetizers also. Definitely save room for the fried ice cream. It's a great venue for large groups or an intimate date. I like that the management seems to also be around to make sure every table is well taken care of. I have been happy with my experience here each and every time.
(5)Natalie E.
Absolutely love this place, from the chips and salsa to the chicken filet with delicious black beans and fried plantains! Everything is fresh and yummy. Always seated and greeted immediately with fantastic customer service. super affordable also!
(5)Vanessa T.
This has became my boyfriend and I's favourite spot. The food is great, they give you large portions. Service is excellent. And all for a decent price. We go here at least 3 times a month
(5)Laura J.
Anytime I have been, there's never a wait. Service is good and prompt. Food is always good. The fried chicken chunks with black beans and rice, can't go wrong. Very affordable.
(4)Kate S.
I took a gamble coming here but it's by far better cuban food than what I ate at calle ocho all week. I ended up having the mexican food and it was delicious- way better than the mexican I get at home. My husband got cuban and it was the best we had.
(5)John R.
Great food awesome and fast service there black beans are the best, I've been coming here for over ten years, I've gone to other Cuban Mexican restaurants and nothing compares.
(4)Elvia M.
This place is right around the corner from my sister house and I love, love, love this place!!!!! They have great lunch specials even on Saturday and Sunday! The food is delicious and always fresh! It hits the spot every time, we usually stick to the Cuban food, but have ventured to the Mexican food too. The prices are great!
(5)Kilroy K.
Went there for the first time on a friend's recommendation. Found it to be outstanding. Food and service was very good. Will go back again.
(5)Diah A.
Had a break from work, and decided I wanted something tasty to supplant the PP&J I had packed myself for lunch. Did some yelping and ended up here! It was about 3, and the place was empty, which I enjoyed as I was dining alone, and this kept my loneliness from public display. Waiter was very nice, offering me my choice of seat, and then bringing water and Salsa before taking my order. The salsa tasted like the salsa I attempted to make when I was in 3rd grade. Here is the recipe: Can of crushed tomatoes. So, eating fresh chips and tomatoes, I spent about 10 minutes in pure indecision over whether I wanted Mexican or Cuban food. Ultimately, I went with Mexican because the place is called Don PePes. I think that sounds Mexican so I wanted to stick to their roots. My steak burrito was delicious! Definitely not out of a can! Smothered in red sauce and cheese and pure deliciousness. The rice and beans were good too. Portion size was big, and by big I mean my whole plate was covered (check the picture). Definitely want to come back again and try the Cuban food!
(4)Ricky R.
Great Spanish and Mexican family restaurant with 5-star service. Very consistent and a classic local restaurant that often is overlooked. Each table is greeted with homemade salsa and tortilla chips, complimentary. Tip: ask for the spicy salsa. Homemade sangria and good margaritas are a must! I had a special the Mahi Mahi enchilada with yellow rice and refried beans, it was excellent. It came covered in ranchero sauce and cheese with lettuce, sour cream and guacamole. Dolphin was sautéed and diced into nice chunks inside, No leftovers ;). My wife always gets the fried chicken filet with Moros and plantains and she absolutely loves it and it's here favorite. It has a delicious spanish breading and never greasy. Always enough to bring home leftovers for lunch next day. Each entree comes with three sides. Rice and beans counts as 2, but if you like you can get a dinner salad as a side! My son who is 9 loves the adult palomino Steak, which is very large and seasoned great. Tender and juicy with sautéed onions. We always finish off with a Fried Icecream which is big enough for a family of four to share. If you never had it you have to try it. Overall a great family restaurant that is consistently delicious and provides 5-star service.
(4)Terry B.
Nothing to write home about. Chile relleno was huge, but bland. The tamale had an excellent corn flavor, but there was nothing inside!. I think the salsa came out of a can, it was watery and again, very bland. Service was good, portions plentiful. Maybe their Cuban food is better, but I came for Mexican food!
(3)Veronica C.
So delicious. Found this spot thru yelp and went to give it a shot with mom. So good, everything was delicious. I got the carne enchiladas and mom got a baby churrasco. I will return whenever I am back in the area.
(5)Christian R.
Don Pepe has been a secret spot for my family dinners for years. The service is decent but the food is really good. If your looking for a decently priced Cuban or Mexican meal look no further. The best deals are the lunch specials. For $7-10 you can get a lunch with great flavor that will fill you up for hours. During my last visit I ordered two lunch specials carry out. Baby churrasco $11.99 and arroz emperial $7.99. Both were delicious as you can see from the pictures. The reason I give it four stars and not five is sometimes you may visit and the service is not that great. Also I have gone a few times and they inform me that they are out of certain menu items. Don't worry though, I guarantee you will not be disappointed!
(4)Cathy B.
This place is amazing! I found it through yelp. I was in the area and was starving so I wanted to go to a good spot. They have great customer service. I highly recommend the churrasco and the mofongo. The pork chunk mofongo was fire! Check this place out.
(5)Sherry W.
Great service and food. I went for lunch on a Thursday and was greeted and seated immediately. Each day the lunch specials change. You can view them online. I chose the fried pork chunks. They give you a choice of three sides. I chose yucca, black beans, and plantains....all for $7.99. You could also choose French fries, rice, or veggies. They bring you complimentary warm chips and salsa. The salsa was super fresh, but had no spice. The entrée was very high quality and a good portion for the price. It had a lot of thinly sliced onions on top of the yucca. The server checked on me often and refilled my water without being asked. There is plenty of parking behind the stand alone restaurant. It is a clean, nice looking restaurant inside. Much better looking inside than outside. If in the area, I will definitely return. They also have Mexican dishes that I would like to try. They have a dessert tray with a variety of desserts that looked amazing. I was too full to try them. On a side note......A few doors down is Mojo donut....best donuts around, but they sell out early! Buy one get one free with Yelp checkin.

I have had more family birthday dinners at Don Pepe's over the years than I can count. This has always been a favorite dinner spot for everyone in our family, as their menu has something for everyone, and we enjoy the casual environment. The service is always outstanding, and the food is always served in a timely manner, and piping hot! We always start with an order of the refried bean dip (seriously, what's their secret? It's just beans and cheese. So simple but so good.), and an order of the fried chicken chunks, which I usually end up dipping into the bean dip. Sometimes a round of margaritas are called for, because you really shouldn't enjoy a Mexican meal without one. It's bad manners to refuse them, people. The margaritas here are delish and not too heavy on the sour mix, which is a refreshing change from other establishments. My standing dinner order is the enchiladas, which is funny because I never order them anywhere else, as I am usually disappointed. I alternate between chicken and cheese. Again, those amazing refried beans are served along with rice, and I usually lick my plate clean. I always steal a few bites of roasted pork from my mom, although she orders it without the onions. But that's ok, it's still good! Very flavorful. And I'll usually help myself to a plaintain or two, which comes with her order. It's a good thing she loves and accepts my food stealing ways. We usually finish dinner with an order of Tres Leches for dessert, because why not. And we are usually celebrating someone's birthday, you can't celebrate without cake! Besides, you should never leave a restaurant hungry, especially when the food is this good.
(5)Lissette C.
Loved this place! Who knew this little place could be so good? The the prices are so cheap to the amount of food you get, talk about getting the best bang for your buck... And can I say the salsa they serve is outstanding I wish I could have their recipe so I could have it all the time and on everything, the pork chucks were perfectly cook I would highly suggest them! But I'm sure anything on the menu would be good
(5)Dillon K.
Great spot for Cuban. I had the Azteca Snapper and it was fantastic. Reasonable price as well.
(4)Roxanne M.
This place is a joke for Cuban or Mexican food!! The burritos are pathetic I mean The ground beef is more like Taco Bell than anything. For Cuban they don't carry Palomilla steak nor boliche :-/ . My personal experience was not good, the waiter looked as confused as I was with menu and what they offer! The only thing I liked was that I asked for them to put the basketball game on and they changed the channel.
(1)Julie F.
I have been going to this restaurant for years. The feel is more of a family owned restaurant than a chain restaurant. They recently updated the restaurant. One big improvement is that they added booths. The chairs they had before were very loud. The restaurant now has a much warmer feel. The food is good and the prices are incredible. The have really great lunch specials starting at 3.99. The lunch specials change everyday, so it is good to keep a copy of the menu handy. They serve both Cuban and Mexican food. Regardless you will get chip and salsa with every meal. The newest menu says they deliver from 11AM to 3PM.
(4)Cheryl S.
Husband and I had been enjoying the food here since the place opened many years ago. It has been sold a couple times but has always managed to maintain its quality and ambiance for an inexpensive cuban restaurant. (Note the addition of Mexican in the name which was added some time ago under new ownership) Walking up to the front door last night we were greeted with very, very loud dance music, ( was definitely not mexican or cuban) which should have been our cue to leave but having loved the food in the past we went in. Inside they had what sounded like Power 96.5 (yes, complete with commercials) blaring and my husband asked if we were in a dance club or a restaurant? We stayed to be served stale (although heated in attempt to disguise taste) tortilla chips which were replaced with fresh (unheated) ones by the waitress who didn't appear at all surprised when told they were stale. It was apparent they were using chicken that tasted like it came out of a frozen bag with a different texture as well-yuk! The 3 plantains on the plate were beyond slimy-(gross) and even the rice and beans were different and without flavor. This place will not last and we will not be back. Such a shame as this unassuming restaurant used to have really, really good food.
(1)zaida o.
this restaurant have a lot of delicious food, the chimichanga is my favorite, the masitas de puerco and tacos are fantastic! the service is not the best but the food is awesome
(4)Karina J.
Best chips and salsa! This is a small Mexican and Cuban restaurant which we've been going to for years... The food is very good! Service is good. Food is always fresh and prices are reasonable. A Pembroke Pines stable.
(4)Victor O.
If you're looking for some great Cuban food at real great prices this is it. They have great daily lunch specials and the free nacho chips you get before you're meal are amazing...just don't fill up on the chips or you won't be able to finish your meal.
(4)Kevin H.
My wife and I had dinner at Don Pepe in Pembroke Pines last night. I had the ground beef chili relleno, despite the fact that I had never heard of adding meat to this dish. Well, there was scarcely any meat and no cheese at all. Not only that, instead of battering and deep frying the chili, it was loosely wrapped in pastry and appeared to have been baked. The sauce wasn't bad however. My wife had the catch of the day, Tilapia. It smelled and tasted more like the catch of last week. Early last week! The only saving grace was the staff. They were very friendly and the service was good. Oh yes, my wife really enjoyed her Piña colada.
(2)Nicole B.
Well it started it good which is the only reason why I give it two stars.. but went downhill fast. Service started off good but once the business got a small pop the service went from good to just awful. The food was ok but the steak was rare when I asked for it med well. I asked to see the dessert menu and waited over twenty minutes finally I waved down a waitress and told her I wanted some coffee don't bother with the dessert menu and just give the check. She comes back with a dessert tray.... Ummm I guess they was a language issue... I told her no I just want coffee and the check. I waited another 10 minutes and finally got my coffee. Not coming back.
(2)Nancy R.
If I could give it a 0 I would. The service was awful!! Everyone looked miserable and depressed. The place was empty. The server couldn't remember who had what and messed up on the side my daughter ordered. That's not a big deal. That happens. What was shocking is that when he brought her the correct side he brought a small plate to take back the other side without asking if she wanted it. Very strange vibe in this place. Full of employees standing around or eating. The food was mediocre at best. Never would go here again and definitely wouldn't recommend someone to spend their money there.
(1)Indira M.
Well, it's an interesting place. There's a variety of food opinions on the menu, but they aren't skilled at one single dish which is why probably why there food is so mediocre.
(3)Marc S.
We used to eat here all the time until the overall food and service started to go down. Passing by today we decided to give it a try. They had a new inside look, very dark looking.. The lighting was much better in the past. Seating was very comfortable. They started with a tiny bowl of chips and a few table spoons of salsa in a very small tray. Very small portions but it was tasty. The waitress offered to refill the chips and salsa but before they did, another waiter came by and informed us another tiny bowl of Chips and Salsa would be an additional $2.99. We passed as I have never heard of this before but I can understand it. They did offer a 2nd tidbit of salsa but I never hear of having to pay for extra salsa after that, that was honestly ridiculous. We both ordered the Al Carbon Burro with chicken which arrived with cold rice, and the Burro and Re-fried Beans were Luke warm and extremely salty. The Burro was itself good other than being warmish. We asked the waiter to please take it back to the kitchen and heat it up. The dishes came back just as cold and after tasting the yellow rice, it was so dry we decided to eat the meal as it. Yellow rice is always moist but this was almost crunchy The only saving grace here is that the service is pretty good and the place was clean, but we won't be returning. With good Mexican/Cuban Restaurants like Azteca in the neighborhood, there is no reason to eat at Don Pepe's III anymore which is pretty sad as years ago this was the place to eat.
(1)Chris R.
Every single time I come here, the food is consistently excellent. I don't have much input on the service, because I usually get it to go, but this is one of those rare places where I can pick literally anything from the menu, and enjoy it.

So I know a thing or two about Mexican restaurants considering it's my favorite type of food. This place although cute and service is decent misses the mark on two Mexican restaurant basics. Their chips and salsa are not fresh and I would expect them to be better since they charge you for them and not for them to get unlimited but per serving. For non fresh chips and salsa that is watered down that is not good. The second not good thing are the fajitas, again something basic for a Mexican restaurant. Flavor was OK but they do not use good beef and the chicken was not all white meat. It didn't come out sizzling but it was all in a soupy water that was not nice. Also fajitas are usually served with the usual fixings but don't expect rice and refried beans with them here. The tortillas tasted as if they were from a boxed taco dinner kit from the grocery store. I always go to the Nica place next door which is great and decided to try this on a last minute whim. FYI - My review is for the Mexican part of the menu only not for the Cuban food.

Great Cuban & Mexican food. We come here often for lunch during work and every time the food is fantastic and always fresh. The rice and beans and enchiladas are my favorite.

Don Pepe is a go-to lunch time spot! They offer a 1/4 roasted chicken w/ rice, beans and plantains for $3.99. The black beans are some of the best I've had. Also the chicken is moist (I order the white meat). My co-worker usually gets the Arroz Imperial or the Cuban Sandwich. Both of which I have tried, and loved. They don't deliver, but it is worth the trip.

Food is excellent & reasonably priced. Service is great & fast. Had chicken tacos today, meat was tender & moist, yellow rice had flavor too! Yuca fries are yummy. Pulled pork was delicious! Great Mexican & Cuban food in the same place.
